The Heart Health Connection: Exploring the Role of Vitamin K in Artery Health
Calcium, essential for strong bones and teeth, can be a double-edged sword in heart health. Excessive calcium buildup in arteries can lead to hardening and narrowing, increasing the risk of cardiovascular issues.
While vitamin K has long been hailed for its potential to promote artery health by aiding calcium regulation, recent research offers intriguing insights into its effectiveness.
Unveiling the Research
A comprehensive review of 14 randomized controlled trials involving over 1500 individuals delved into the impact of vitamin K supplementation on artery health. The study utilized Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) testing, which assesses calcium deposits in arteries, and unearthed compelling findings. Supplemented with vitamin K, participants exhibited reduced calcium buildup in their arteries, suggesting a potential protective effect.
Navigating Controversies
Despite promising findings, vitamin K supplements remain controversial in the medical community. Neither the FDA nor reputable heart health organizations advocate for their routine use due to insufficient evidence and potential risks, especially for individuals on blood thinners. Prior consultation with healthcare providers is paramount before considering vitamin K supplementation.
Embracing Nutrient-Rich Foods
Rather than relying solely on supplements, integrating vitamin K-rich foods into one’s diet emerges as a safer and more holistic approach to support artery health. VK1 (found abundantly in green vegetables and vegetable oils) and VK2 (present in fermented foods, dairy, meat, and eggs) contribute to calcium regulation.
Incorporating an array of VK1-rich foods, such as leafy greens, lentils, and peas, alongside VK2 sources like cheese and eggs ensures a balanced intake of this vital nutrient.
JC’s Dietary Strategies
Enhancing the absorption of VK1 from plant-based sources involves pairing them with healthy fats, such as avocados or hummus. Additionally, individuals can optimize VK2 uptake by selecting whole food sources and including various…
