If you’ve spent time in the fitness world, you’ve noticed a recurring pattern: every solution eventually becomes a problem.

One perfect example of this is footwear.

Back in the 1960s and ’70s, if you decided to start running for exercise, you likely didn’t go out and buy a unique pair of running shoes.

Instead, you wore the same shoes for any other athletic activity.

However, shoe companies soon convinced us that running required special shoes, and we eagerly bought into their marketing without questioning them.

This led to another problem: people began wearing their favorite running shoes for everything, even if they needed to be better suited to the activity.

This was especially evident in the weight room, where running shoes caused problems during exercises like deadlifts.

Powerlifters soon adopted Chuck Taylors as their preferred footwear because the flat soles allowed for better stability and technique.

But what if the best answer to the footwear question is no shoes?

Could deadlifting in bare feet be superior to lifting in any shoe?
