Chilling Out with Wim Hof: A Reality Check on the Icy Wellness Trend
Ever heard of Wim Hof 🌬️❄️, the Dutch daredevil known for his extreme cold exposure techniques? Suppose you’ve scrolled through a couple of YouTube videos lately.
In that case, you’ve probably seen folks raving about the Wim Hof Method, claiming it’s a game-changer for physical and mental well-being.
But does it live up to the hype, especially in just 15 days? Let’s dive into a recent randomized controlled trial that aimed to unravel the mysteries behind the Wim Hof Method.
The Study Breakdown
Researchers from the University of Bern recruited 42 young males for a little experiment. One group stuck to their regular routines, while the other embraced the daily Wim Hof routine:
- Breathing Exercises: A series of deep inhalations and breath-holding sessions.
- Mindfulness Meditation: Five minutes of focusing on breath and bodily sensations.
- Cold Water Immersion: A brisk cold shower gradually increases exposure time.
The routine took about 15 minutes each day.
The Cold Truth: Study Findings
After 15 days, the results were in, and they weren’t quite what the ice bath enthusiasts might have hoped for. The study found no significant changes in heart rate variability, blood pressure, pulse wave velocity, mood, or stress levels.
In short, the touted benefits of the Wim Hof Method needed to be more evident in this short-term study.
